After years of waiting, one of Paris’s most beloved landmarks, Notre Dame Cathedral, is finally open! In other words, we’re back and better than ever — it feels like Paris is whole again. And honesty, you don’t even need to be a Christian to feel this way. All Parisians agree the entire city feels like it’s back to its old self.

Since the devastating fire back in 2019, the cathedral has undergone an incredible transformation, bringing it back to its former glory. Now, as the doors reopen, visitors from around the world can once again step inside this iconic piece of history!

The Fire Seen Around the World

If you were in Paris in mid-April 2019, you’ll remember the smoke billowing up into the sky, the burning smell, and the general panic. And if you weren’t, you likely saw the images on TV.

On April 15, 2019, Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire, sending shockwaves through Paris and beyond. The blaze destroyed the cathedral’s roof and caused the collapse of its famous spire, leaving behind a haunting image of the burning structure. Firefighters worked tirelessly to save the main building and its priceless artifacts, but the damage was significant all the same.

The world reacted with an outpouring of grief and support. Millions watched the tragedy unfold live, and almost immediately, donations poured in from individuals, businesses, and governments. French President Emmanuel Macron promised that Notre Dame would be rebuilt — at the time we all hoped before the 2024 Olympic Games — and people began submitting their ideas for the restoration.

A Heated Debate Over the Design

Amidst the donations and well-wishes, the question of how to rebuild Notre Dame’s roof and spire sparked intense debate. Some architects and designers saw it as an opportunity to add a modern touch to the historic cathedral, while others believed it should simply be restored to its original, former glory.

Bold proposals included:

After much debate, the decision was made to restore Notre Dame to its pre-fire state. The goal was to honor its historical and cultural significance so the cathedral would remain as Parisians and the world had known it for centuries.

A Restoration Like No Other

With the design settled, the massive task of restoring this nearly 900-year-old masterpiece began. And, restoring Notre Dame would be no small feat! Experts had to carefully analyze the structure so it could be safely rebuilt while maintaining its original integrity. Architects, historians, and skilled artisans (some even using medieval techniques) worked tirelessly to bring the cathedral back to life.

One of the biggest challenges was recreating the spire. The original, designed by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, was rebuilt exactly as it was before, using traditional materials like oak and lead. In total, over 1,000 trees were carefully selected from French forests to reconstruct the wooden framework.

Beyond the structural work, restorers also cleaned and repaired Notre Dame’s famous stained-glass windows, statues, and interior decorations. Every detail was meticulously studied to ensure that visitors would see the cathedral as it was before the fire — if not even more stunning.
